A 403(b) plan is similar to the more well-known 401(k) plan in that it allows an employee to defer money into a retirement account on a pre-tax or Roth basis. The earnings in the retirement savings plan may be tax-deferred or tax-free depending on the contribution type. Eligible employees can enroll in the 403(b) plan immediately upon hire, and may change their deferral amounts at any time.
For 2021, the maximum employee deferral to a 403(b) account is $19,500 per year. Participants age 50 or older are also permitted to contribute an additional $6,500 per year in “catch up” funds on a pre-tax basis. Uplift Education does not match contributions to 403(b).
